Musing Mondays – Oct. 17 – Book Covers?

It’s time again for Musing Mondays over at Should be Reading.

This week’s musing is: Do you judge a book by its cover?

Sort of. It’s been a long time since I freely browsed the book shelves, just mindlessly picking up books. I get most of my books from blogs, fan lists, and key word searches. To be fair, I’ve read some truly horrible books that had great covers and some great books that had horrible covers. The only book in the last couple years I wasn’t able to finish had a very pretty cover but the writing and main character drove me crackers.

I can say that if I’ve been recommended or found through search a book that sounded great but had a cover with a stupidly beautiful woman and stupidly handsome man making kissy faces at each other I’m very apt to run screaming into the night. Romance books that have nothing but romance in them bore me to tears. My Mother devours Danielle Steel like air and I just want to set her books on fire.

Since I read mostly fantasy, a lot of the books have these epic landscape scenes as covers. Some just have the title in fancy letters. I’ll pick up anything and read the blurb. I’m not overly picky.

  1. Hi!
I love books with pretty covers. Haven’t had a bad reading experience yet. Have a great day!

  2. I really try hard not to judge a book by its cover, but I won’t lie some books I read because they grabbed my attention. I was going to start highlighting beautiful art on covers.

  3. I agree that you definitely can’t judge a book my it’s cover. Invariably 50% will disappoint if you do and you’ll be missing out on the other 50% that have dreadful covers. That said it is fun to browse the shelves looking at covers and reading blurbs to find new authors. In this time of technology, I find I usually read based upon recommendation but miss the old days of discovering new books myself at the library or bookstores simply by browsing.

  4. in my experience, the cover can be one factor…and an important factor…in deciding if I pick a book up or not.
    I admit, I love a nice cover.
