Musing Monday – Book Clubs?
Ah, Monday. Again. Do you want to know the first thing I said when coming into work this morning? Of course you do. I said, “No. No, it’s fine. You’re an idiot but it’s fine. I’ll take care of it.” Because I apparently can’t even get a cup of coffee without being jumped by a co-worker who did something dumb. I almost hit three separate people who cut me off driving into work and, really, this is a fine way to start the week. I also realized I’m about 1,500 miles over where I should have gotten my last oil change and service on my car. I’m already giving April up as a lost cause. It’s not looking too good.
Our prompt this week is: Do you belong to any book clubs — face-to-face, or online? If so, how long have you been with the group(s)? If not, why?
Not really. I’ve wanted to join a face-to-face book club but then the idea of having to deal with people on a regular basis makes me want to hide under the covers like a turtle. It’s not that people scare me or anything; it’s that I find social interaction, especially in large groups, to be exhausting and quickly irritating. I can handle two people besides myself for an extended amount of time before I start getting tired of keeping up and have to start controlling mild homicidal tendencies. Larger groups just accelerate the symptoms. (I do not react well to bullshit and excessively whiney people.) I do better with one-on-one interaction. I belong to a few online groups and forums but I mostly lurk since most social interaction seems to require a stupid amount of drama no matter where the hell I am. (The whole world is made up of thirteen year old girls, I swear!)
I’ve yet to find a book club that really fits my reading tastes. Kind of “high-fantasy imaginative escapism fiction”. Everyone wants to read sophisticated contemporary fiction that bores me to tears. Blah. I’d rather read a newspaper.
